Walker
This work was inspired by observing pedestrians moving through the city and is an exploration of the spatial qualities of human position over time. It is a reflection of the deliberate quality of pedestrians in downtown Toronto juxtaposed with the concept that we are limited by our body's own physical limitations in space.
The lights illuminating the silhouettes in the fabric have been programmed to light up in sequence to reflect three consecutive snapshots of the body's position when it is walking. Inspired by material explorations of diffusing lights in multiple layers of fabric, I began to experiment with how I could develop a sense of space through layering techniques which built up to become a three-dimensional whole. I thought that suspending light-up silhouettes in frames of fabric could demonstrate a stroboscopic feel, where each freeze-framed position would consecutively light up to resemble a fluid motion.
